Chapter 19
She felt the shift in Falcon. One minute he was relaxed and chatting about Mrs. Hastings, and the next it looked like he wanted to dart out of the car. She couldn't understand what could have caused it. She thought back to the conversation they were having, and didn't think she'd said anything that would have upset him. She could tell by his puzzled tone that he really didn't understand why the older woman was so intrigued by him. Although she knew why. Falcon was a man who pushed people away. Maybe not on purpose, but subconsciously he made sure to stand apart from others, especially people he didn't know. She had picked up on it the first time they had met.
"Everything okay?" she asked with caution. "You seem tense all of a sudden." She half expected some snappy retort that he was fine and it was none of her concern, so color her surprised when he glanced over and looked almost apologetic.
"Sorry, I should have told you before we drove off." He cleared his throat. "I noticed a car circled the block twice when you were talking to Mrs. Hastings. I had Ray run the plates. It came back to a rental. The name they gave was Sophia Petrilloâ"
"Wait, from The Golden Girls?" she interrupted him.
"You know the fucking show? Ray made the same comment." Falcon's annoyance was clear.
"Umm, yeah." She mentally added the duh on. "Who hasn't seen The Golden Girls? I love watching the repeats on Hallmark." Then it dawned on her. "Wait, so you've never seen the show? Your mother never watched it?"
"I have no idea. Didn't much care what she watched or didn't. I told you, princess, we no longer talk. Haven't thought much about her in years."
She expected at least a little bit of sadness in his tone, but instead, it was devoid of any emotion. It made her sad for him. She remembered he said he wasn't close to his family, but she figured he would at least have some good memories. It appeared that wasn't the case at all.
"Okay, so we established you don't know who The Golden Girls are. Noted for future reference. I'm assuming that means the name used to rent the vehicle is fake."
"Correct, and that same person is following us now. Don't look back, but it's the blue Honda two cars behind us."
She did her best to glance in the side mirror. A slight weave from the car behind them allowed her to see exactly what car Falcon was talking about. "I see it. I can't make out the driver, but I think it's a woman."
"Yeah, I got the same impression when they drove around the block earlier, but I think the baggy clothes and hat are supposed to throw us off. Ray did say the picture on the license was of a younger woman." She watched Falcon continue to glance in the rearview mirror. They were supposed to be heading back to the hotel, but this wasn't the same way they had come earlier.
